Kindle ebook readers are crashing Windows 10 PCs post-Anniversary Update

Image
Windows 10’s Anniversary Update has been a fairly smooth rollout for Microsoft thus far, but some significant problems have still cropped up at various points. There have been major problems with webcams  due to changes in Windows 10 Anniversary Edition’s supported standards — and now there are apparently problems with various Kindle devices as well. So far, the problems seem isolated to the  Kindle ebook readers  rather than Kindle Fire tablets, and, like many problems, it’s not affecting everyone. Some readers have reported that the issue only hits USB 3.0 ports, while others have issues across the entire system. It’s also been reported that some devices work perfectly if you connect the Kindle while the system is off, then turn it on again. Disconnecting and reconnecting the Kindle post-boot will still cause a crash and booting the system with the ebook reader connected doesn’t solve the problem for everyone, either. Say bye-bye to spinning rust: Soon most PCs won't have hard drives

Image
They've been a fixture of the computing industry for 60 years, but in 2018, hard drives will be pushed aside by storage systems using memory chips in PCs, an analyst firm predicts. Hard drives revolutionized computing when  IBM commercialized the first, RAMAC, in 1956 . They read and write ones and zeros as tiny patches of magnetic information on rotating platters. But they don't fit well in phones, thumb drives and camera memory cards, which use a type of memory chips called flash instead. PCs with hard drives remain common, but the fastest machines use banks of flash memory called a solid-state drive (SSD) instead. SSDs no longer are exotic. This year, 33 percent of PCs sold will come with SSDs, but that should grow to 56 percent in 2018, analyst firm TrendForce forecast Monday. That's good news for consumers, since SSDs are much faster than hard drives at letting computers turn on, load apps and store files. Check my colleague Dong Ngo's SSD upgrade gui

How to Use a Dark Theme for (Almost) Everything in Windows 10

Image
How to Use a Dark Theme for (Almost)  Everything in Windows 10 With Windows 10’s Anniversary Update, Microsoft now offers a dark theme–known as “dark mode”. This option was previously hidden and could only be enabled with a registry hack. Now, it’s a simple toggle. There’s just one catch: it doesn’t apply to every Windows application. But we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to get your whole desktop (or as much as possible) looking dark. Enable Dark Mode for Windows 10 Settings and Apps To enable the new dark theme, head to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Scroll down and select “Dark” under “Choose your app mode”. The Settings application itself will immediately turn dark, as will many other “Universal Windows Platform” applications. However, it’s up to each developer to support the dark theme, and some applications will continue using their normal colors. This option also doesn’t affect desktop applications, including Windows 10’s File Explorer

The 50 Best Registry Hacks that Make Windows Better

The 50 Best Registry Hacks that Make Windows Better We’re big fans of hacking the Windows Registry around here, and we’ve got one of the biggest collections of registry hacks you’ll find. Don’t believe us? Here’s a list of the top 50 registry hacks that we’ve covered. It’s important to note that you should never hack the registry if you don’t know what you’re doing, because your computer will light on fire and some squirrels may be injured. Also, you should create a System Restore point before doing so. Otherwise, keep reading. Prevent Windows Update from Forcibly Rebooting Your Computer We’ve all been at our computer when the Windows Update dialog pops up and tells us to reboot our computer. I’ve become convinced that this dialog has been designed to detect when we are most busy and only prompt us at that moment. There’s a couple of ways that we can disable this behavior, however. You’ll still get the prompt, but it won’t force you to shut down. Here’s how t
