Instagram is now using AI to describe photos for users with visual impairments

Instagram announced today that it’s going to roll out new features specifically catered to people with visual impairments. The first will involve “automatic alternative text,” that’ll read descriptions of photos aloud when someone browses their feed, Explore page, or a profile. It relies on object recognition technology to create these descriptions. The company’s also introducing “custom alternative text,” where users can add more descriptive captions for their photos so that people using screen readers — software that describes the elements displayed on a screen — can hear that description.

While this is a first for Instagram, Facebook has been using AI to describe photos to blind users for years. This video gives a pretty good sense...
